Whether you’re a young professional or a more seasoned gentleman, noticing that first gray hair or the many more to follow is a reality that all men are going to need to face at some point. Don’t panic and start plucking them out, since that can be damaging to your scalp and contribute to hair loss. Instead, you need to start thinking about the long term strategy in this battle against gray hair.

Can Graying Be Stopped?

At KwikMed, we’re experts on helping men keep their hair through medications like finasteride (generic Propecia). Unfortunately, there’s no such treatment or magic that can stop the natural graying process, or even slow it down. Simply put, your hair naturally starts losing its melanin, which is what gives it color. The good news is, despite not being able to stop gray hairs from coming in, there are still things that you can do about it.

Friend Or Foe? The Gray Hair Style

While lots of guys panic at the sight of gray hairs, this “battle” against gray hair may not need to even be a battle at all. All that you need is a little bit of a change in perspective. Sure, having that hairstyle that’s full of vibrant color creates a stylish, youthful appearance, but it’s not something that you need to hold on to forever. Just think of how many times you’ve had to change your style through your life. Is your hairstyle the same that it was when you were a kid? How about when you were in high school? How about that time you just tried to try something different?

The Verdict: Gray Hair Is In

Getting gray hair is the same thing: something different. If you choose to embrace the gray and work with it instead of trying to get rid of it, you’re just taking on a new style that looks more experienced and sophisticated. Own it and you sure won’t look like an old man; you’ll look like a regular George Clooney. One way to use the gray hair to your advantage is through professional gray blending, which combines your natural hair color with the gray to give you control over how much gray you want to show at a given time. That all being said, a full head of gray hair will give you that seasoned Steve Carrell look. Learn more about how to save your hair with finasteride.

In an ever-changing political climate with healthcare at its core, it’s no surprise that issues involving women’s health are still up for great debate around the country. When it comes to topics of abortion, birth control, and emergency contraception, opinions vary greatly. The consequence? Access to these services and products seem harder to get than ever before.

doctor with arms crossed holding a stethoscopeEmergency contraception, which has been approved by the FDA as an over-the-counter drug, is still being blocked by many pharmacies, leaving women with few options to avoid pregnancy after having unprotected sex. According to Reuters, the FDA’s ruling should allow for the purchase of the “morning-after pill” without restriction of age or identification requirements. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case. In a recent study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health, which focused on pharmacies in four Southwestern states, findings showed that “just 28 percent made it simple and straightforward for teens to purchase the emergency contraception.” Both misinformed staff as well as a lack of anonymity in the purchasing cycle play into the difficulty. Yet, most nationwide pharmacy chains are in the know—95% of them said patients could come in on their own to purchase their emergency contraception.

Despite some pharmacies making it difficult for young women to purchase these products, political agendas are also in the mix and making things even more complicated. Alabama, for example, is ready to make some harsh changes if Roe v. Wade were to be overturned, proposing a statewide amendment that would allow the government to prosecute women who use emergency contraception. Though this take isn’t welcomed on a national level, it is cause for concern with political tension rising, especially in the women’s health department.

According to The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, barriers to access of emergency contraception include health system and pharmacy barriers, misconceptions on the effect and safety of the medication, as well as financial reasons, to name a few. Despite this widespread effect, outlets like KwikMed are making it easier for patients to find emergency contraception such as Ella, without the hassle of a pharmacy or lack of privacy.

A new study has cracked the code on the cause of a rare form of hair loss known as hypotrichosis simplex. These findings are now a solid foundation for further research, insinuating that what you may have been blaming on age or stress could actually be directly correlated to heredity. Though every case is different, researchers can now pinpoint a gene that is responsible for this rare condition that takes effect at a young age.

Latino person with beard grooming in bathroom at home. White metrosexual man worried for hair loss and looking at mirror his receding hairline.

Hypotrichosis simplex is a rare form of hair loss that starts to take its course at infancy, causing sparse and fine hair growth. As those affected grow older, the hair loss progresses, leaving adults who suffer from HS with very little hair on their scalp. The gene detected is said to lead to “the impairment of an important enzyme that has a crucial function in cholesterol metabolism.” According to Professor Regina C. Betz from the University Hospital of Bonn which conducted the study, this impairment affects the hair follicle as opposed to one’s cholesterol itself.

Because this form of hair loss, or alopecia, is so rare, these findings may not be the answer for everyone. It does, however, help researchers as they continue to find a treatment for male pattern baldness and other, more common forms of hair loss. In doing so, they hope to find new approaches to combating the condition as well as improving current medications aimed at regrowth and strengthening of the hair follicles. Of course, hair loss can be caused by many factors, notably stress, aging, hormone imbalance, and heredity, but the complete biological basis has yet to be discovered.

Until further treatment is available, there are other steps you can take to avoid male pattern baldness. Changes in lifestyle habits, medications or managing stress can help prevent premature hair loss, while prescription medications like Finasteride and Propecia have proven most effective in strengthening hair, slowing down loss.

Until recently, the cause of erectile dysfunction has been up for debate. For some men, the cause comes down to diet and stress, while others may have underlying health issues such as diabetes or heart problems that is affecting blood flow. Some men may even experience erectile dysfunction as a symptom of performance anxiety, or simply the pressure to perform well sexually for their partner. A new study however, claims to have pinpointed a gene that could be at the root of erectile dysfunction. Targeting this gene can help researchers and doctors find better solutions for the millions of men who suffer with these symptoms.

According to Discover Magazine, Kaiser Permanente funded this study, which was published in early October in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The study, which looked at over 36,000 men, focused on an area of DNA which “interacts with a gene known as SIM1”. The SIM1 gene is known to effect sexual arousal in men—it is unsure if this gene does the same for women. According to the article, when this area of the DNA is mutated, it can subsequently affect the SIM1 gene and potentially cause symptoms of erectile dysfunction in men.

Varying health conditions were taken into account, including men’s weight and lifestyle habits, or if they have diabetes or any other cardiovascular issues. The conclusions of the study however, show that the impact of SIM1 is constant despite all of these health factors. This constant shows “that the same genetic factors are at play in men who experience the condition differently.” The goal of the study, according to PNAS, was to dive deeper into the “etiology of erectile dysfunction.” Ideally, more insight into this offers more room for developing new drugs and drug therapies that can target these focus areas of DNA, honing in on the root of the problem.

Until then, traditional medications as well as simple lifestyle changes can improve conditions of erectile dysfunction. Speak to one of KwikMed’s U.S. licensed physicians to see which ED medication is best for you: https://www.kwikmed.com/

Nicotine Withdrawal: How To Deal

October 10, 2018

Congratulations! You’ve made the decision to better your health and kick your smoking addiction to the curb. That alone can be the hardest part of the quitting process, and you should be proud that you’ve taken that step. KwikMed’s team of U.S. licensed physicians provides people like you access to Chantix, a prescription smoking cessation drug, to help kickstart your smoke-free journey. You may feel like the toughest part is over, right? Unfortunately, most cases show that it’s not.

Withdrawal symptoms can be the most draining and painful part of the quitting process to get through. According to the NAABT, withdrawal “consists of a predictable group of signs and symptoms resulting from abrupt removal of, or a rapid decrease in the regular dosage of, a psychoactive substance.” Nicotine, an addictive agent found in all tobacco products including cigarettes, makes it incredibly difficult to quit smoking once it’s become a common habit. And because the withdrawal process can be so harsh (even with the help of cessation medication), it’s important to be prepared to deal with it in a healthy way. A great first step is to make sure you have a strong support system, who will motivate you to stay on track.

To help, we’ve outlined a few things to keep in mind about how to deal with possible withdrawal symptoms:

  • Know what to expect — You can’t mentally prepare for dealing with nicotine withdrawal if you don’t know the symptoms. The most common effects quitters typically face are fatigue, irritability, depression, anxiety, changes in hunger and weight gain. It’s helpful to think about how you can deal with each of these symptoms individually, ahead of time. Implement meditation, stay busy, or have a friend you can confide in to help you when your symptoms are at their worst.

  • Identify your triggers — They will be there. Will seeing a stranger smoking on the sidewalk cause anxiety for you? Identify what outside factors in your daily life could trigger an urge for nicotine, and set aside steps about how to overcome them. For example, if you always smoked a cigarette with your morning coffee, you may have to ditch the caffeine until you’re comfortable drinking it by itself.

  • Distract yourself — Distract yourself from the urge of smoking with new hobbies. Start working out, golfing, writing, knitting, or painting! Find a tangible outlet to focus on, so your mind is busy dealing with what’s in front of you and not stuck on where you’re going to find your next cigarette.

  • …and reward yourself! — This isn’t easy, so make sure you’re rewarding yourself for every milestone you reach being smoke-free! Treat yourself to a yummy breakfast, a glass of wine, or a new pair of shoes for every goal you reach on your journey. Whether it’s a day, a week, or a year, rewarding yourself will give you incentive to continue. And of course, each day that passes means you’re one step closer to less symptoms and feeling healthier and happier than ever before.

  • Take your time — Like we said, each day can be a milestone. The fact of the matter is that quitting smoking is a long process, which means you need to take it one day at a time. Focusing on the present is the best way to beat small hurdles throughout the day, so take a deep breath and take your time.

  • Remember why you quit in the first place — Some days may be harder than others. When those days happen (and they will), try to remember why you decided to quit in the first place. Whether it was for your health, your kids, or just a habit you were desperate to break, reminding yourself of why you chose to take on this journey can be all it takes to get through another day.

The initial stages of quitting can be extremely tough, but they won’t last forever. If your mind is set on saying goodbye to cigarettes, you’ve implemented the use of Chantix as prescribed, and have a supportive group of people rallying behind you, you too can be successful in your journey.

If you think Chantix could be helpful in kickstarting your venture to being smoke-free, speak to one of KwikMed’s U.S. licensed physicians, completely online: https://www.kwikmed.com/buy-chantix/

Marketed as an easy way to quit smoking traditional cigarettes and as a healthier tobacco substitute, vaping and the use of e-cigarettes has become increasingly popular over the last few years. A new study however, has found that there is no evidence vaping will lead to being cigarette free. In fact, according to Express UK, some insurance companies claim that these e-cigarettes are no better than traditional ones.

A recent study suggests that there is no correlation between using electronic cigarettes and being able to quit smoking faster or easier when compared to other products. The study, which was conducted by researchers at Georgia State University, looked at 1,284 adult smokers and found that only 16 percent had quit smoking a year later. According to researchers, “Absent any meaningful changes, ENDS (electronic nicotine delivery systems) use among adult smokers is unlikely to be a sufficient solution to obtaining a meaningful increase in population quit rates.” Despite these conclusions, a majority of the participants “stated they were using the devices to help them quit smoking cigarettes” according to U.S. News & World Report.

Though e-cigarettes are thought to be a good way to lean off of a dependency on traditional cigarettes, the addictive nature is just as strong. According to The Guardian, “The nicotine it contains is more palatable, coming from nicotine salts, which are also in dry tobacco leaves, rather than freebase nicotine. In the US, the dose has been high – Myers compares the hit to Marlboro cigarettes.” Matt Myers, president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids urges adults and parents to be aware of how powerfully addictive these products can be.

But is there a better way? Medications like Chantix, which in effect, trick the brain and ease symptoms of nicotine withdrawal are typically the safest and most effective bet. Chantix is unique in that it is a nicotine-free pill, but is also able to block nicotine from attaching to the nicotine receptors in your brain if you do smoke while on the medication.

Safe sex is happy sex. But despite efforts to increase sexual education in schools, as well as wide accessibility to condoms and birth control, we’re only human. Emergency contraception was first available in the 1960’s, but was restricted as treatment for women who had been raped. After decades of trial and error and women’s rights battles, the “first progestin-only method of emergency contraception” was approved by the FDA in 1999. In the following years, new options began to emerge and accessibility became less of an issue.

Taking emergency contraception for the first time can be daunting, especially when you’re in a rush and are feeling anxious or scared. But don’t fret — at KwikMed, we offer a quick-turnaround for you to receive your medication the next day. If you’re still wondering how this all works, you’re not alone. We’re breaking down everything you need to know about Ella:

Ella was approved by the FDA in 2010 and became available by prescription at pharmacies around the country. Today, Ella is a major emergency contraception brand, and is easily accessible through your doctor or online providers such as KwikMed. So how does it even work? According to Very Well Health, “Ella contains ulipristal, a non-hormonal drug that blocks the effects of key hormones necessary for conception.” Ulipristal is used at such a low, but effective dose, that it will prevent the conception, but enable to provide an abortion (as opposed to similar drugs that are approved by the FDA). For that reason, Ella is effective up to 5 days after unprotected sex — but the sooner, the better. It’s been suggested that if your BMI is over 25, the “morning-after pill” may not be as effective. Yet, doctors still recommend taking the pill after having unprotected sex. It’s important to speak to one of our licensed physicians to see if this is the best option for you.

Unfortunately, experiencing side effects when taking emergency contraception is normal. These can include menstrual pain, nausea, or dizziness. According to Insider, EC pills are up to 90% effective in preventing conception. So if you’re not ready for an unintended pregnancy, taking Ella can give you peace of mind. Most people head to the Internet for answers when they encounter a health problem or when something just doesn’t feel right. Unfortunately, a lot of false information can make its way around news sites and discussion boards, causing assumptions and self-diagnosis that are simply incorrect. With so many factors playing into Erectile Dysfunction, it’s easy for the truth to get lost when trying to find answers for your health problems. That’s why we’re here to bust (and confirm) some common ED myths:

  1. ED only affects older menMYTH. Despite age being the most common and significant factor for the almost 52% of men who suffer from ED, it can occur in men of all ages. According to a study in the American Journal of Medicine, “15% of men [ages 20 to 39] have difficulty with their erections at least occasionally during sex.”
  2. It’s all mental — Most likely a MYTH. Psychological factors such as stress, guilt, or embarrassment do play a role in erectile dysfunction, though it’s more likely that there’s a physical reason things aren’t going great down there.
  3. All treatment is the same MYTH. KwikMed offers a variety of ED medication such as Viagra, Levitra, Stendra, and more. Though these medications are similar, the level of effectiveness and benefits may vary depending on your lifestyle or severity of your erectile dysfunction. Speak to a one of our U.S. licensed physicians to see which option may be best for you.
  4. Smoking will affect your ED TRUTH. Lifestyle habits such as smoking, poor dieting, and excessive drinking can all contribute to your erectile dysfunction. According to Men’s Health, making certain decisions like “cutting down on booze can also improve erections. It helps the vessels in your body rush blood to your penis, keeping it there so you can perform.” Keeping your overall health in check can have a positive impact on your ED symptoms.
  5. ED is not dangerous  — It depends. Erectile dysfunction is common and for many, is harmless and can be easily treated. Unfortunately, it can also be a sign of more serious health problems related to your vascular health, such as diabetes or high blood pressure. Rule out any of these bigger health issues by consulting with your physician if you’re having trouble getting or maintaining an erection.

Whether you think you’re too young or too healthy to have ED, there’s always a root to the problem. Always consult your physician to make sure there aren’t other serious health factors contributing to your erectile dysfunction, or head to KwikMed to see which medication is best for you: https://www.kwikmed.com/

We all hate to see signs of aging, but some symptoms show up far earlier than we expect or hope. Premature and excessive hair loss, or androgenetic alopecia, affects millions of men, and despite efforts to slow down loss or boost hair growth, many still struggle to find a solution. Although Propecia can slow down the effects of excessive hair loss, contributing factors do vary. Men’s Health magazine has dug deep to find what could be the root of the problem, besides natural aging. The following are just some factors to keep in mind when finding a solution that’s right for you:

  1. Thyroid Issues — Both low and high thyroid activity can contribute to your hair loss. This however, will likely cause hair loss throughout the whole head or even on your body, as opposed to just a contained part of your scalp. Dr. Robert Anolik, M.D. of New York City told Men’s Health, “most screenings involve checking these routine blood levels with a simple test,” so your doctor will let you know if your thyroid should be checked out.
  2. Inflammation of Scalp — Inflammation of the scalp or an “extreme case of psoriasis” may also play into hair loss. Most inflammatory conditions can be treated with over-the-counter products like dandruff shampoos, but according to the article, prescription care can treat more severe symptoms. Infections that reach your scalp (like ringworm) can also cause excessive hair loss in one contained area. Luckily, once treated, hair growth should resume back to normal.
  3. Autoimmune Diseases — Certain autoimmune diseases can deteriorate hair-producing cells. This is known as alopecia areata, and according to the American Academy of Dermatology, can contribute to both patchy and widespread hair loss. If you see signs of poor autoimmune functions, see a doctor immediately.
  4. Certain Medications — Like most prescription medications, side effects are common and can affect all parts of your health, including hair growth. Certain prescriptions, particularly blood pressure medication, as well as strong supplements can also play a role. If you’re taking multiple medications, supplements, steroids, etc. be sure to confirm with your doctor that they are not directly factoring into your hair loss.
  5. Genes and Environmental Factors — Of course, genetics and your environment are incredibly important to your overall health. If hair loss is common in your family, you will be more susceptible to experiencing it yourself. Additionally, staying on top of your health and wellness, such as your blood pressure or cholesterol metrics, can also help you avoid premature or excessive hair loss.

Generally, these factors are easy to pinpoint with the help of a doctor, but it can be difficult to know where to start. Luckily, KwikMed offers consultations with U.S. licensed physicians to see if Propecia is the answer for your hair loss.

With all prescription medication comes the risk of side effects, both mild and serious. Common side effects for most prescription drugs include nausea, dizziness, or mood swings. Yet some drugs, such as Propecia, a common hair-loss medication for men, have been linked to more serious side effects to the reproductive and nervous systems, as well as a high risk of prostate cancer. A recent study conducted by SWOG’s Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial however, suggests otherwise. The results are significant, as they confirm earlier findings from a 2013 report published by the National Cancer Institute.

The original study, published in 2013, not only suggests that men taking Propecia shouldn’t fear the risk of prostate cancer, but rather “indicates that taking finasteride can actually lower a person’s risk for developing prostate cancer”, according to Guy Counseling. Despite these findings, many have continued to correlate Finasteride [which is branded as Propecia], with the cancer in recent years.

The Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial, which was launched 25 years ago by SWOG, confirms through their initial findings that “finasteride not only significantly reduces a man’s risk of prostate cancer; it is safe to use based on very long-term follow-up in our study,” said Dr. Ian Thompson, Jr. who led the trial. He went on to say “In PCPT, we found no increased risk of prostate cancer death in men who took finasteride compared with men who did not. These results are transformational.”

This is good news for men seeking treatment for excessive hair loss, but have feared the side effects and risk of developing prostate cancer, the most commonly diagnosed cancer in American males.

Despite these optimistic findings, always consult with a doctor to find out if Propecia is right for you as results and side effects do vary. Speak with one of KwikMed’s U.S. licensed physicians today to get started: https://www.kwikmed.com/buy-propecia/
